Marion Cotillard Talks The Dark Knight Rises

You think you know everything about Marion Cotillard’s character in “The Dark Knight Rises”? To riff on a familiar phrase around these parts, you have no idea — maybe, that is.

MTV News caught up with the Oscar winning actress at the New York City premiere of her new movie “Contagion” last night, and we had to ask her about her work on Christopher Nolan’s latest Batman movie. Some potential spoilers lie ahead, so proceed with caution…

If you’ve been following “The Dark Knight Rises” even somewhat closely, you’ve probably heard the rumors by now that Cotillard’s supposed character — a Wayne Enterprises board member named Miranda Tate — is just a cover for her real identity, Talia al Ghul, daughter of the late League of Assassins leader Ra’s. Miranda does not appear in the comic books, but Talia is very much tied into the Caped Crusader’s paneled history… which makes it very interesting that Cotillard says the character she plays does not have comic book roots.

“Well, actually, it was not based off of a character in the comic,” she told us when we asked if she took cues for her character from the Batman comics. When we asked if she was telling us the truth, she answered with a smile: “Yes, I am.”

And if we talk to her in a year from now, will we be able to say she was lying to us?

“No,” she said emphatically. “No!”

So, there you have it: according to Cotillard herself, her character is not from the comic books. If she’s being 100% truthful, does that mean that she’s not playing Talia as so many of us (myself included) suspect? Or is she playing coy, doing her best to preserve Nolan’s secrets?

Regardless of her true identity, Cotillard had nothing but fantastic things to say about working with the “Dark Knight Rises” team: “It’s amazing to work on Christopher Nolan’s set. I’m so happy that I’m working with him again. I could do tons of movies with him. It’s a huge project, but at the same time, it’s like a family crew. He’s worked with them for such a long time, so you really feel like you’re on a family set.”

Sorry I was away for a week on a trip. I am back now! So lots of updates to be added.

Warner Bros.’ global thriller “Contagion” features three of today’s most admired women in cinema: Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Marion Cotillard.

“Contagion” follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart……..

………Simultaneously, at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, clusters of new cases light up sectors on a world map as epidemiologist Leonora Orantes, played by Marion Cotillard, works urgently to reconstruct the final days of Beth’s itinerary and connect the seemingly random dots that lead back to ground zero. And patient zero.

“Fortunately for Orantes, ” explains Cotillard, “we now have video cameras everywhere so the first thing she does is study the footage from the cameras in Beth’s hotel, the elevator and the casino. But even that can only take her so far. You can discover a point of contact between two people, and you know both of them became ill, but it could have gone either way – the question is, which one of them infected the other?

“Meanwhile,” she adds, “Time is the enemy. As quickly as Orantes and the others work, the virus is moving even faster. People are dying and desperation is growing.”

Opening across the Philippines in September 9 in IMAX and regular theaters, “Contagion” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Marion’s Elle France Interview

Elle. Seeing you, it seems that motherhood has totally blown you?
Marion Cotillard. I am actually completely appeased by motherhood. I was not particularly stressed before, but I saw a great fullness, a real joy.

Elle. The small inconveniences of the post-pregnancy does not disturb you?
MC. No, quite the contrary. It is curious, but all of a sudden, there was a total acceptance. The body, for example, it is as if all my complex were gone. It relaxes me enough! It happened when my body started to change with pregnancy. Something made sense. And I found myself having the same words that pregnant women or with children.

Elle. That is to say?
MC. Things like “All of a sudden, we know why we are here,” for example. In my life, I felt moments of intense pleasure or joy provided by shootings or major events, but which disappear when the experiment ended. With motherhood, I feel pure happiness and timeless.

Elle. This is the idea that we are here to give life?
MC. There is something miraculous to be connected to all those women who, through the centuries have experienced the same thing … or who will one day live.

Elle. Do you also that you need to be loved and accepted will be sated differently?
MC. Yes, I think the priorities are the same, and I hope I will be less in this condition. I say disease, even if the word is a bit much. We share it all in this business and it is not necessarily fulfilling. The desire to be looked at creating a kind of unhealthy desire that never really satiated because it does not fill you inside. When I see everything that happens in this business, and I see that this need is still there, I wonder.
